6 Ways to Build a Spirit of Excellence

Excellence is not perfection. It is choosing to give your best, with the right heart, even when nobody is watching.

Here are 6 ways to build a spirit of excellence.

1. Do Small Things With a Great Attitude

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” — Colossians 3:23

Excellence begins with your attitude.

Have you noticed how much attitude affects an experience? Even if the food is great, bad service can ruin the experience. On the other hand, a person who serves with joy and gratitude can make an ordinary experience special.

It’s not just what you do, but how you do it.

David was anointed to be king, but first he faithfully looked after sheep.

Don’t wait for a big assignment to demonstrate excellence.

You may not do everything perfectly, but do it heartily. Put your soul into it.

2. Keep Your Word

“Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’” — Matthew 5:37

A person of excellence values their word.

If you say, “I’ll deliver it by Monday,” deliver it.
If you say, “I’ll call you back,” call back.
If you say, “I’ll pray for you,” pray.

Your words should mean something.

This also includes punctuality.

If I tell someone I’ll be there at 7, I want to be there at 7. If I’m delayed, I communicate.

You want people to be able to say:

“If he says something, he will do it.”

Plan ahead. Respect other people’s time. Don’t make people constantly remind you or follow up with you.

Excellence means being someone people can count on.

3. Take Responsibility

Genesis 39:6, 23

Joseph was trusted with responsibility because he took ownership.

A person of excellence doesn’t constantly need reminders, follow-ups or encouragement. They see what needs to be done and take initiative.

Don’t ask, “What’s the minimum I need to do?” Ask, “What more can I do?”

In Genesis 37:12, Joseph went looking for his brothers. He was seeking, searching and going the extra mile.

Sometimes excellence is as simple as seeing a tissue on the floor. You can walk over it, or you can pick it up.

Nobody may notice, but God sees.

Excellence also means adding value.

Don’t just think about how much you can get from your job. Ask, “How much value am I bringing?”

Don’t just be money-minded. Be people-minded.

Ask yourself:

Who has benefited because I was there?

4. Build a Private Life With God

Daniel 6 | Matthew 6:6

Daniel had a private life with God. Prayer was his custom.

Excellence is not only about how you perform publicly. It is about who you are when nobody is watching.

There will always be friends, family, work, travel, ministry and responsibilities competing for your attention.

But nothing should become bigger than your time with God.

Your gifting and grace flow from His presence.

If you want to live supernaturally, your eyes must remain on Him.

When you consistently neglect your personal time with God, you are effectively saying, “My effort, skill and talent can do more for me than God’s presence.”

Excellence begins in the secret place.

5. Treat Every Person With Value

A person of excellence doesn’t discriminate between people.

Yes, we have different relationships and different priorities. But priority should never become prejudice.

In 1 Samuel 9:5, Saul listened to his servant.

Sometimes people respect the boss but disrespect the security guard. But you don’t know who God may use in your life.

Treat people with value, regardless of their position.

Excellence also means being teachable. Like Naaman, we must be willing to receive correction and instruction—even when it comes through someone we don’t expect.

Don’t ask, “Who are you to correct me?”

Ask, “What can I learn from this?”

6. Work With Integrity

“The integrity of the upright guides them.” — Proverbs 11:3

Integrity means there is no difference between who you are publicly and privately.

No lying.
No cheating.
No manipulation.
No dishonesty with finances.
No misuse of company resources.

Proverbs 20:7 says that the righteous who walks in integrity leaves a blessing for his children.

Ask yourself:

What do I do when nobody is looking?

It’s better to lose a job than lose your integrity, because when you lose your integrity, you lose much more.

Don’t compromise because someone says, “It’s just a small thing.”

Don’t take company resources because “the company has plenty.”

Don’t lie because “nobody will know.”

Integrity is doing the right thing when doing the wrong thing would be easier.

Excellence Is a Spirit

Excellence is not about impressing people. It is about honouring God in everything you do.

It shows up in:

* Your attitude
* Your commitments
* Your initiative
* Your private walk with God
* How you treat people
* Your integrity

Excellence is not perfection. It is giving your best with the right heart.

When these things become part of your life, excellence stops being something you occasionally demonstrate.

It becomes who you are.
