How to Spend Quality Time with Jesus
One of the greatest privileges of being a child of God is the opportunity to spend personal, quality time with Jesus. In a world full of noise, hurry, and endless distractions, learning to slow down and be with Him is not just refreshing—it’s life-transforming. Quality time with Jesus goes beyond routine devotions or quick prayers; it’s about building intimacy, hearing His heart, and allowing His Word to shape your life.
Here are 3 keys to spending quality time with Jesus:
- Read and Re-Read the Scriptures Until the Word Comes Alive
The Bible is not just a book of information—it is the living Word of God. When you open the Scriptures, you are encountering Jesus Himself, because He is the Word made flesh. Don’t rush through a passage just to finish your daily reading. Instead, slow down. Read it once, then read it again. Pause at words or phrases that stand out to you. Ask the Holy Spirit to highlight what He wants to speak.
Sometimes, it may feel like nothing is happening, but as you patiently stay with the text, the Word will suddenly come alive. It will leap from the page into your heart, bringing light, conviction, comfort, or fresh revelation. That’s when reading shifts from duty to delight.
- Pray in Tongues and Meditate
After you read the Word, spend time praying in tongues and meditating on what you just read. Praying in tongues edifies your spirit and aligns you with the heart of God. It bypasses the limits of your natural understanding and allows the Holy Spirit to pray through you and for you.
As you do this, meditate deeply on the Word. Turn it over in your heart. Picture it. Ask, “How does this apply to me today? What is God saying to my life, my family, my work?” This combination of prayer in the Spirit and meditation creates a deep connection where the Word begins to transform your thinking and shape your perspective for the day.
- Listen and Write
Spending time with Jesus is not just about speaking to Him, but also about listening. After reading and praying, take time to be still. Quiet your heart and listen for His voice. He may give you a word of encouragement, a reminder of His promises, or a gentle instruction for the day.
Write down what you hear. Journaling is a powerful way to capture God’s voice and track His faithfulness. Along with this, write down at least three points of gratitude every day—it keeps your heart thankful and focused on His goodness. Then, as you pray, ask the Lord for a prophetic word of encouragement for someone else. Releasing encouragement not only blesses others but also trains your heart to live outwardly from the overflow of His presence.
Final Thoughts
Spending quality time with Jesus doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s about slowing down and making space for Him to speak, shape, and strengthen you. When you read the Word until it comes alive, pray in tongues and meditate, and listen and write, you’ll find your time with Jesus going deeper than ever before.
The more intentional you are, the more you’ll discover that quality time with Jesus is not just a spiritual practice—it’s the secret to living a life full of joy, power, and intimacy with Him.
