How to Get Out of Debt (and Stay Out)
In today’s culture, debt has become the norm. From student loans and credit cards to borrowing for weddings or vacations, people have grown comfortable with living in debt. But as believers, we’re called to live differently—with a Kingdom mindset that reflects the heart of our Father.
Debt may be common, but it is not God’s best for your life.
What Does the Bible Say About Debt?
The Bible is clear—God does not desire His children to live in debt. He is a King, and we are His children. As citizens of His Kingdom, we’re called to live in financial freedom, not financial bondage.
When Abraham made a covenant with God, he refused to take even a sandal strap from another man (Genesis 14:23). That’s the level of commitment God wants from us—a life so dependent on Him that we don’t rely on borrowing from others.
The First Step to Freedom
The foundation of debt freedom begins with a quality decision:
“I will no longer borrow.”
Make a covenant with God today that you will trust Him as your source. From that point on, you can begin your journey out of debt—and into financial peace.

5 Practical Steps to Get Out of Debt
1. Know the Truth
Freedom starts with revelation. You won’t break free from debt until you fully believe that debt is not God’s will for your life. Fill your heart and mind with truth—listen to messages, study the Word, and surround yourself with people who speak and live debt-free.
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” – John 8:32
⸻
2. Gather the Information
Get honest about where you are. List every person, bank, or institution you owe. Write down the exact amounts, and arrange them from smallest to largest. Clarity creates strategy.
⸻
3. Start with the Small Ones
Use the “debt snowball” method—pay off the smallest debt first while making minimum payments on the others. As you clear each one, you gain momentum and confidence. Every time you cross one off the list, you’re declaring victory.
⸻
4. Make an Effort
Proverbs 6:4 says, “Give no sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids”—in the context of paying off debt. In other words: hustle.
Make sacrifices. Cancel unnecessary expenses. Cook at home. Say no to luxuries.
When God sees your diligence and faith, He will provide ideas, opportunities, and supernatural help to speed up your journey.
⸻
5. Keep Giving
Don’t stop tithing. Don’t stop sowing.
Debt is not bigger than your seed. Keep reminding yourself: God is my source, not my paycheck. When you give, you stay in faith, not fear.
⸻
Final Thoughts
• You don’t need to be miserable while paying off debt.
• You don’t have to skip every celebration until you’re debt-free.
If you’re consistent and intentional, it’s okay to celebrate small wins along the way. Treat yourself when you hit a milestone—not out of impulse, but as a reminder that progress is worth celebrating.
